There¿s one sort of jarring layer change, and just before the adrenochrome scene (more on that below) there was a thin vertical line running from top to bottom of my screen, about a third of the way from the left, for a minute or so. There were a few small burps and hiccups here and there, though.

Las Vegas, as we all know, has quite a lot going on visually, and this movie captures both the bright lights of the city and the dull dusty desert beautifully. The scenes out on the strip and inside the casinos are particularly gorgeous. I can¿t think of a film with more colors, more interesting camera angles, more eye candy, than this one, and the quality of the video here only heightens that impression.

The Video Visually, this film is a masterpiece, and this beautiful anamorphic transfer, in its original widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 does it full justice. As many times as I had read this book, I never really got what it was ¿about¿ until I saw the movie, and in particular the scene where Duke reminisces about San Francisco, 1965. The story goes from being very funny to being very scary and depressing- much like the era whose end it dramatizes. The guy put on 40 pounds, grew out an awful mustache and head of hair, and became the scariest bastard you would ever want to meet: ¿a strange mutant never considered for mass production.¿ And Benicio Del Toro, as Duke¿s attorney, is perfect. His every move and word seems as if it¿s transmitted by radio signal from Thompson himself, standing just off camera. He supposedly spent four months hanging out with the Doctor and even let Thompson personally shave the top of his head, to emulate Thompson¿s pattern baldness. And we are chock full of that, man.¿ĭepp as Duke is outstanding. ❺n affirmation of everything that was right in the national character- but only for those with true grit. The Movie There really is no plot to speak of, other than this: Duke and his attorney alternate between roaming the streets and casinos of Las Vegas and cowering in their fully debauched hotel rooms on huge amounts of acid, mescaline, cocaine, grass, ether, and whatever they can get at the bars, with no intention whatsoever of paying for their accomodations or of doing the job they were sent to Vegas to do in the first place.

Thompson himself hand-picked Johnny Depp to play Thompson alter ego Raoul Duke, and Monty Python alumnus Terry Gilliam signed on to direct Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a movie that I consider to be the best possible result of trying to film an unfilmable book. Many attempts have been made to bring this story to the big screen: Bill Murray starred in the botched HST biopic Where the Buffalo Roam, a film that led many to believe that a full-on hardcore movie of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was ¿unfilmable.¿ That is, until Hunter S. It's the story of a journalist and his attorney riding out the bad vibes that closed out the 60s by taking heroic doses of every drug known to man and wandering around the Vegas strip like animals. If you went to college, or ever took drugs of any kind, or ever knew someone who went to college or took drugs of any kind, you¿ve probably been exposed to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Thompson¿s 1971 classic book without even looking for my well-worn copy. This reviewer is able to quote this and many other lines from Hunter S. ¿We were somewhere in the desert around Barstow when the drugs began to take hold.¿
